Humans have been thinking about creating artificial wombs since the 1950s, with the aim of achieving painless reproduction in women and relieving them of the burden of childbirth and reproduction. Scientists have been working on artificial wombs for the past sixty years, testing them on animals and successfully growing embryos. However, using artificial wombs to conceive people has always raised ethical and moral concerns.
"The Reproducer" is an investigation of the future creation of the artificial womb. It comprises two works: a pure white duvet with some cut-out womb designs, and a number of varied pink soft womb sculptures, the different shapes representing them as derivatives of the original womb. I transform them into the separate organism and imagines the birth of the artificial womb.
